B.A. in Chemistry with Secondary Teaching Licensure
The B.A. degree in chemistry can be tailored to meet North Carolina requirements for secondary (grades 9-12) teaching licensure in Comprehensive Science. Students must complete at least 33 semester hours of chemistry that must include the following courses: CHEM 1251, 1251L, 1252, 1252L, 2131, 2132, 2131L, 2132L, 2125, 2141, 3111, 3695, 4165, 4165L, 4695, and 4696. Students must also complete eight hours of physics (PHYS 1101, 1101L, 1102, and 1102L), six hours of calculus (MATH 1241 and 1242), seven hours of biology (BIOL 1110, 1110L and 1115) and eight hours of earth science/geology (GEOL 1200, 1200L, 1210*, 1210L*).
* ESCI 1101 and 1101L may be taken in the place of GEOL 1210 and 1210L.
Students seeking teaching licensure in comprehensive science must complete the secondary education minor in addition to the chemistry major. Advising and admission to the secondary education minor are administered through the Office of Teacher Education, Advising, Licensure, and Recruitment (TEALR) in the College of Education (COED Suite 119). After admission to the secondary education minor, advising for the minor is offered through the Department of Middle, Secondary, and K-12 Education (MDSK) in the College of Education. Students should consult with their co-advisor in MDSK for detailed planning of their professional education coursework in conjunction with their major advisor in the Department of Chemistry for detailed planning of the major coursework. Students must reserve their final semester for student teaching (SECD 4453); all major requirements must be fulfilled prior to the student teaching semester. Licensure applications are the responsibility of the student and the Office of TEALR.
