“Structure and dynamics of membrane proteins involved in bacterial pathogenesis”

Abstract:

The research aims of the Columbus laboratory are two-fold: to address the challenges in membrane protein structural biology and to investigate the structural determinants of bacterial pathogen – host interactions mediated by membrane proteins. We are specifically investigating the structure, function, and dynamics of N. gonorrhoeae and meningitides Opa proteins, which interact with host proteins and induce pathogen phagocytosis. To enable our structural investigations of Opa proteins, as well as membrane proteins in general, we aim to understand the physicochemical basis of detergent-membrane protein interactions and improve structural methods to accelerate the investigation of membrane proteins with NMR spectroscopy. This presentation will describe our recent and ongoing progress towards these overarching and long-term goals.
