Financial Support

Most students in the Chemistry Master’s program at UNC Charlotte are supported with teaching assistantships or with research assistantships paid from grants (stipends vary).

Most TAs also receive in-state tuition and some additional fee support in the form of a Thomas D. Walsh tuition fellowship. Further financial support to cover the non-resident tuition differential may be available, partly through the Graduate School. US citizens and permanent residents are expected to establish NC residency for tuition purposes by the start of their second year. Furthermore, students are required to carry health insurance, which may be purchased through the University. Requirements and costs of student health insurance can be found here.

Financial support during summer may be available through teaching or research for qualified returning graduate students.

The Chemistry Department also sponsors the Thomas D. Walsh Graduate Research Fellowship competition to recognize outstanding graduate research. This is the most prestigious student award in our department and consists of a research assistantship and in-state tuition and fee support.

Within the Department of Chemistry, returning Master students may apply for the highly coveted and competitive Thomas D. Walsh Graduate Research Fellowship that is currently awarded once a year to one MS student. The Thomas D. Walsh Graduate Research Fellowship, supported by a generous donation of Dr. Thomas D. Walsh to the Department of Chemistry, was inaugurated in 2005 and has recognized outstanding research contributions by MS students during their first year of graduate research. The fellowship competition is usually called in May and supports the awardee with a generous stipend as well as in-state tuition and fee coverage for one academic year. Support for the final summer term is available if this time is required for the completion of the MS thesis.
